It’s a very fair question.
And if you’re asking it, I’m glad you are.
Because when it comes to your body – especially if you’re returning to exercise after surgery, injury, or simply a long gap – safety matters far more than enthusiasm.
Online exercise can feel like a leap of faith.
No instructor watching you.
No one correcting your posture.
No one adjusting your alignment.
So how can it possibly be safe?
Let’s talk about that.
The truth about online exercise
Not all online exercise is created equal.
Some platforms are simply recordings of high-energy classes.
Some assume you already know what you’re doing.
Some move too quickly.
Some offer no explanation at all.
And if you’re:
- recovering from surgery
- rebuilding strength
- feeling stiff or unsure
- or simply out of the habit of exercise
That style of teaching isn’t reassuring.
It’s intimidating.
Exercising safely online isn’t about whether a class is live or recorded.
It’s about how it is taught.
What makes online exercise safe?
Online exercise becomes safe when:
- movements are broken down clearly
- instructions are precise and layered
- alternatives are offered
- you’re encouraged to stop if something doesn’t feel right
- the teacher anticipates common mistakes
- the pace allows you to think, adjust, and breathe
In other words – when education comes first.
Why I’m confident teaching you online
I’ve been teaching for over forty years.
In that time, I’ve:
- taught complete beginners
- supported post-operative clients
- trained hundreds of Pilates instructors
- worked with women in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond
- refined how to explain movement so it truly makes sense
Over the decades, I’ve learned something important:
If you explain a movement properly…
If you build it step by step…
If you teach from the foundations upwards…
You don’t need to physically touch someone for them to move safely.
You need clarity.
You need progression.
You need intelligent sequencing.
That’s what makes it safe.
“But you can’t see me…”
You’re right.
I can’t see you.
But here’s what I can do.
I can teach you in a way that:
- starts at a true base level
- builds gradually
- reminds you that you are in charge
- encourages you to pause if something doesn’t feel right
- offers options instead of pressure
There’s no rush.
No “push through.”
No sense of having to keep up.
You’re guided to listen to your body – not override it.
A different way to approach online exercise
What makes the difference is structure.
Instead of random workouts, the focus is on helping you understand:
- how to stand well
- how to align your joints
- how to strengthen safely
- how to mobilise without strain
- why certain muscles support certain joints
This kind of approach means you’re not just copying movements.
You understand what you’re doing – and why.
And that’s what builds confidence.
So… is it safe to exercise at home online?
It can be.
When it’s:
- thoughtfully designed
- clearly explained
- progressively structured
- taught by someone experienced enough to anticipate your concerns
Safety isn’t about being watched.
It’s about being well taught.
If you’re still unsure
If you’ve been hesitating because you’re not sure whether online exercise is right for you – that’s completely understandable.
You don’t need to be fit already.
You don’t need to feel confident.
You don’t need to get it perfect.
You simply need a place where you can begin safely.
